History of Asbestos

The use of asbestos is nothing new – there is record of it being mined as long as 4,000 years ago. However, it’s desirable properties, including sound absorption, resistance to fire, heat, and electricity, and toughness, led to large scale mining and use in manufacturing in the late 1800’s. Asbestos fibers are often mixed with cement or woven into fabric because of its resistance to fire and heat. It makes an excellent insulator when used for electrical wiring purposes.

It was not until fairly recently that the harmful effects of asbestos were documented and publicly accepted, and its use in household applications minimized. Unfortunately, many buildings still contain asbestos, which will need to be removed and disposed of quickly and carefully. This requires professionals who know what to do.
