An Alternative to Asbestos

Your Fort Worth Area home is likely quite old. Loads of houses are being built every day but the fact is, most are still over 30 years old. If you live in one of the Fort Worth houses built before the 1980s there are some important things to realize. Homes built before the 1980s almost certainly have asbestos in them. What is asbestos and why is it dangerous? Asbestos is a mineral based ingredient used in construction projects in the 20th century due to its building-friendly qualities. Asbestos minerals are non-flammable and good insulators. But upon further research, scientists found that asbestos fibers, upon inhalation, cause many deadly diseases such as asbestosis, mesothelioma, and lung tissue scarring. All can be irreversible and fatal diseases. Luckily, we can help you remove the asbestos from your home and in fact, teach about alternatives that the industry now uses in place of asbestos.

One replacement product is polyurethane foam. Polyurethane foam is also a good insulator just like asbestos. However, the chemicals used in polyurethane foam are not deadly to inhale like asbestos. It also comes in convenient spray and expand form. This makes polyurethane foam an even greater insulator. I still would not recommend eating polyurethane foam. It can look tasty but looks can be deceiving. It is toxic to taste! Just not so deadly to inhale.

Another replacement is amorphous silica fabric. This is a high quality fabric that has similar properties as asbestos fibers. Amorphous silica fabric is also non-flammable and does not rot. However a big difference is that it is not toxic like asbestos is. Amorphous silica fabric is used in many ships, automotive, and electrical industries.

Thermoset plastic flour is a useful putty to use for construction projects. It is made of finely ground wood fibers and gelatin-like substances to create a sticky paste that is used as a filler for plastics and adhesives. This material is also safer to use by construction workers.

Finally, there is cellulose fiber. No, this is not a food. It might sound like it by the name. Cellulose fiber is a combination of cotton, wood fibers, linen, and paper. It makes a great cement/concrete substitute for asbestos products. It is used in many concrete construction projects, walls, and roofs. Very temperature resistant which makes it good.

It is so great that construction workers now use safer products in their buildings. But there remains a problem. What about all the houses that still have asbestos in them?
